Marking 50 years of women’s ordination in the Anglican Church, Trinity bestowed honorary degrees upon Bishop Victoria Matthews ’76 (MTh ’87) and Bishop Sally (Johnson) French ’95 (MDiv ’01) in May. Following the Faculty of Divinity Convocation, the College unveiled an updated Bishops Board in the St. Hilda’s foyer — created in 1994 to honour Trinity alumnae who have gone on to serve as bishops, beginning with Bishop Matthews’s own consecration that year. The board also recognizes Bishop Ann Tottenham ’62 (BST ’65, BEd ’74, ThD Hon. ’95). Bishop Sally French has now been added following her 2023 installation as Bishop of New Jersey.
Stephen Anderson ’06 has relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia, after eight years in Sarasota, Florida. He recently completed coursework at the Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership.
Lawrence (Dave) Blake ’11 has had an eventful few years since Trinity. With the Canadian Armed Forces, he was deployed to long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, served as a group commander for infantry, specialized and combined arms training in Ukraine in support of capacity-building operations, and recently returned from Iraq, where he supported counter-terrorism and security sector reform operations. He now works with the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General.
Paul Bolton ’75 retired in 2021 following a research career in physics that took him across the globe. His final position was Visiting Professor in the Physics Department at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany. He and his wife, Ingrid, are based in Menlo Park, California.
Randy Boyagoda ’09 has been appointed Director of the Jackman Humanities Institute at the University of Toronto and Dean’s Special Advisor in the Humanities, effective July 1, 2026. A professor in the Department of English, Boyagoda has been involved with the Institute since 2016, including leading Scholars-in-Residence teams on Dante in 2017 and on civil discourse in 2024. He previously served as Vice-Dean, Undergraduate in the Faculty of Arts and Science, and as Principal and Vice-President of the University of St. Michael’s College. A writer and critic, his new novel, Lords of Serendipity, will be published this September. He delivered the Faculty Address at Trinity’s Last Lecture for the Class of 2T6 in April.
Jeremy Burman ’04 has been elected to the American Psychological Association’s Council of Representatives. He recently concluded a three-year term as president of the APA’s Division for History (Div. 26), and was elected Fellow for History in 2022 and for Developmental Psychology in 2023. While at Trinity, Burman served as Head of Non-Residents (2002–2003) and Vice-President of The Varsity (2003–2004), graduating with an Honours B.Sc. in psychology and receiving the Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Award in 2004. He later served on the Trinity College Corporation (2005–2011). Burman is presently tenured in theory and history of psychology at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.
Howard Chang ’01 has concluded his diplomatic career with the United Nations in New York, Geneva and Beijing, and has relocated to Wall Street to take on a new executive role at a global fintech firm specializing in U.S.-dollar stablecoins.
Mairi Cowan ’97 has received a 2026 President’s Teaching Award, the University of Toronto’s highest honour for teaching excellence, educational innovation and educational leadership. Cowan is a professor, teaching stream, in the Department of Historical Studies and the Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy at U of T Mississauga, and in the Department of History and the Centre for Medieval Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science.
Sandra Dennis ’71 has retired after a career as an intermediate-level French teacher in Toronto.
Derek Freeman ’70 took a moment during Reunion to recall his time serving as chair of the Year Representatives from 1992 to 1996, a role he took on at the suggestion of Nancy Graham ’58. During his tenure, Freeman helped expand the reach and scope of the representatives, building representation for Trinity alumni across Canada and internationally.
Nishaant Jacobus ’26 was awarded a Governor General’s Silver Medal, presented to top-standing graduates across the University of Toronto’s first-entry divisions. Jacobus graduated with an Honours B.Sc. in chemical physics and mathematics, and also received Trinity’s Chancellor’s Award for top graduating student in science. Both awards were presented at the Trinity Graduation Awards Ceremony.
Azrah Manji-Savin ’12 has been named to The Peak’s 2026 Emerging Leaders list, which recognizes Canadians under 40 in business and technology. Manji-Savin is CEO and co-founder of Syzl, an online platform that connects food entrepreneurs and businesses with underused commercial kitchen spaces.
Alexander Markovic ’09 has recently received the 2026 PHE Canada IMPACT Award, a national recognition presented by Physical and Health Education Canada to individuals who have made transformative contributions to the field. Markovic was recognized for his work as a teacher at O’Connor Public School in Toronto, where he grew the intramural program to foster student leadership, inclusivity and well-being.
Erin Mooney ’93 has been named a 2026 Mentor with the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, a three-year appointment in which she will mentor exceptional PhD students. Mentors are experienced practitioners recognized for their leadership and expertise outside academia, broadening Scholars’ professional networks and perspectives.
Jason Okpere ’26 graduated at age 19 with a degree in neuroscience and molecular biology, while competing as a top thrower for the Varsity Blues track and field team. During the 2025–26 season, Okpere won OUA gold in weight throw and U SPORTS silver at nationals. He has been accepted into U of T’s Master of Applied Science program in biomedical engineering, beginning this September, on his way to a goal of becoming a physician-scientist.
Lucas Penny ’22 was recently profiled by the University of Toronto Centre for Entrepreneurship for his work bridging scientific research and real-world access. Penny is pursuing a PhD in the Department of Medical Biophysics, researching less invasive, more accessible methods for early detection of head and neck cancer. He is also co-founder and managing director of Nucleate Canada, a student-led, non-profit organization that helps graduate students across the country turn biotech research into companies.
Richard Phillips ’90, winner of a 2025 U of T Arbor Award for volunteer service, was recently profiled by U of T’s Defy Gravity campaign. Phillips has co-chaired the Faculty of Music Advisory Council since 2018 and supports the faculty through the Richard Phillips Graduate Scholarships and the Richard Phillips Baroque Oratorio Fund. He is also chair of the AI Safety Foundation, which he co-founded with Professor Emeritus Geoffrey Hinton to support work on AI alignment and safety.
Kim Samuel ’83 was interviewed on the Women in Family Business podcast on the topic of belonging. Samuel is the founder of the Belonging Forum and the Samuel Centre for Social Connectedness, two research and advocacy organizations working to build systems of belonging globally.
Joyce Santamaura ’46 attended this year’s University of Toronto Chancellor’s Breakfast during Reunion weekend, an annual event honouring alumni marking milestone graduation anniversaries. Santamaura was among those celebrating an 80th graduation anniversary.

Provost Nicholas Terpstra has been appointed University Professor, the University of Toronto’s highest academic rank, reserved for no more than two per cent of tenured faculty. A leading historian of the Italian Renaissance, Terpstra is recognized for his work on civil society, religious refugees and digital humanities, including the DECIMA mapping project. He has served as Trinity’s 16th Provost and Vice-Chancellor since July 2024.
