The Derek Pearson Henderson Allen Award
I am honoured to be the inaugural recipient of the Derek Pearson Henderson Allen Award. This recognition has meant a great deal to me, for its affirmation of my academic work and commitment to social justice during my time in the Ethics, Society, and Law (ES&L) program at the University of Toronto.
As an ES&L student, I was challenged to think critically about justice, responsibility, and the structures that shape our world. The award reflects the spirit of the program which has shaped so much of who I have become.
The financial support was also invaluable as I prepared for my next chapter. I graduated in June 2025 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in ES&L, with minors in English and Political Science, and headed to Cambridge in the UK to pursue a Master of Law degree.
I am deeply grateful to the family of Derek Allen for funding the award. It not only supports students but sends a powerful message about the value of ethical leadership and social impact. I trust future recipients will also be encouraged and inspired to continue the legacy of Derek Allen himself.
The Derek Pearson Henderson Allen Award: Application deadline usually in May each year.
Usually, 2 awards of $3,000-3,500 each will be made each year.
The award was created in 2023 to honour Professor Derek Allen’s contributions to the Trinity College community, particularly during his sixteen-year tenure as Trinity’s Dean of Arts.
Awarded to a student, from any college, entering third-year or fourth year, and enrolled in the Ethics, Society, and Law program. Applicants will have made a contribution to society by volunteering and advancing social justice initiatives, to help improve the lives of individuals or groups who are disadvantaged or subject to injustice. Applicants must meet current financial need requirements and have a minimum 3.30 CGPA.
Applicants must submit a statement outlining their eligibility for the award along with a letter of reference pertaining to their involvement in social justice initiatives.
Usually awarded in June-July, payment made in September upon registration.
