Research Interests

Teaching Area: Canadian Literature; Contemporary Literature & Culture

Research Interests: Creation and destruction. My most recent book is Vandals: A History of Destruction from Antiquity to Tomorrow, published in February 2027 by Penguin Random House in Canada and Simon & Schuster internationally.
Publications: I published my first book in 2005 with University of Toronto Press, called When Canadian Literature Moved to New York. It’s not bad, but I’d wait for the movie. My second book, Arrival: The Story of CanLit (Anansi, 2017), was a national bestseller and Globe & Mail and National Post best book of the year.

Awards, Affiliations, Personal Interests, etc.:
National Magazine Award (2009); President’s Teaching Award (2009); 3M National Teaching Fellowship (2011); Gabrielle Roy Prize (2005). Mostly, I just like teaching and writing. Music helps. In between, very long walks.
